Bruce's Comments: JetCat is the most popular brand in the US and has perhaps the best reputation among current turbine manufacturers. I have run a P60 (on a different model) and can tell you it's an absolute gem. Mine starts easily, runs solid, idles perfectly, and never flames out no matter how rough I am with the throttle. Although I have no first-hand experience with the P70, it's been out there a few years now and is a well-proven turbine. The JetCat USA guys are also known for their fantastic customer support. This is a word-of-mouth business and JetCat has consistently earned high praise from the jet community.

Which one should you use in the R54? Of the two JetCats, the P60-SE is still my first choice. The new SE (Special Edition) turbines feature a much-improved throttle response. I like that it is smaller and lighter than the typical 54-class turbine and still puts out 13 pounds of thrust. The light weight is a double benefit, because it will require less balancing lead in the nose (perhaps none!).

The P70 is a little big for the R54, but it does fit between the fuselage and wing. It is heavier than the typical 54-class turbine and that means extra nose weight too. R54 builders who have used a P70 rave about the combination. If the extra thrust better suits your future plans, the P70 might be the way to go. Oh, and the P70 is still the same price as the P60-SE. That's a great value that might be hard to pass up.

Bruce's Comments: After researching the entire spectrum of 12-lb. turbines, this is the engine I chose for my second R54. In fact, this is the engine shown on the kit plans. PST has a great reputation and their prices are extremely competitive. The J600R has already proven to be a popular choice for the R54.

Bruce's Comments: Jesus Artes is widely known as one of the true pioneers in the development of model-size turbine engines. Bruce's Comments: Wren is well known and respected in the jet community as a true pioneer in turbine development. Their breakthrough design, the MW54, was based on a 54mm diameter compressor wheel, and was the smallest production turbine on the market when it was introduced. Later engines like the RAM 500, PST, Simjet, and others were based on the Wren, and many of them used Wren-supplied turbine wheels. The "54" in Reaction 54 is in honor of this class of turbines whose family tree can all be traced back to the English company.

Wren continues to develop their design to this day. Their latest and most powerful version is the SuperSport, which is the same size and weight as the MW54 Mk3, but puts out over 18 pounds of thrust. I know of at least one builder who is flying an R54 with the SuperSport, and I don't think he would trade it for anything! I still recommend programming the top end for no more than 14 pounds of thrust, but the extra power would be hard to resist.
