The wonderful thing about model airplanes is the amazing variety of disciplines within the hobby. We all have our preferences and enjoy applying our skills differently. Some are fearless pilots, some are whizards in the workshop, and some focus on the social aspects. Personally, I've always enjoyed the challenge and creative nature of dreaming up new model designs. In fact, I've spent more time daydreaming and sketching than building and flying. These designs aren't doing me any good sitting in a tattered folder on a shelf, so this seemed like a good way to share them with the modeling community.

I truly wish there were enough hours in a day to experiment with all the designs presented here, but that's just not going to happen. If you want to build one of these aeronautical concoctions for yourself, by all means have at it. Please understand that I simply don't have the time to provide much engineering guidance, but would appreciate hearing about your experiences if you play with any of these designs. It's been a lot of fun dreaming up these birds, and I hope they inspire you to do a little dreaming yourself.

...And I use the term loosely. In my mind, "conventional" basically means a forward-facing engine, wing in front, tail in back. You know, like a normal airplane. In my younger days, normal seemed too easy. Now that I've started to grow up (and again, I use the term loosely), my designs are definitely more normal. There are good reasons most planes look the way they do...

"Y"-TAIL

SPARTAN "40"

BEACH BUM I

.010 GLIDER

HALF-PINT

I dearly love the old Cox Tee Dee engines, particularly the .09 which is extremely light and powerful. Many of my early designs were small because 1) they were a good way to experiment without investing a lot of moola, and 2) I was a goofy teenager without a lot of moola.

.09 HORNET

TEEDEE-T

SPACE KADET

INVERTED "VEE"

EEL

RACER/SPORT

Every designer worth his salt dreams of flying wings. Usually, it's with an eye towards efficiency and aeronautical purity. For me, it means less to build! They look cool too, which is always a great motivator.

NECROMANCER

SALACIOUS CRUMB

When Burt Rutan is your hero, you have to worship at the Temple of Canard. My experiences with model canards; however, has proven that I'm not worthy. There might be a winner or two here, but I doubt it.

CANARD

ANOTHER CANARD

FANTABULOUS II

SWEPT FORWARD

TANDEM

POINT THIS WAY

Like a lot of long-time modelers, I started out as a kid with control liners. The first model I remember flying was a plastic, break-apart Cox PT-19 (Gasp! An ARF!). The first real model I built was a Goldberg Lil' Whizard. So I still have a soft spot for control line and dabbled a bit in rudimentary design.

CRUDE DUDE

Finally, presented here are the mental ramblings of a clearly unfocused model designer.
